Serves 4-6 Ingredients:
  • 1 loaf Country Hearth English Muffin Toasting Bread
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon zest
  • 1/2 almond extract
  • pinch salt
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
Directions: Grease a 9″ x 9″ baking dish. Using a kitchen shears, cut each bread slice (minus ends) into large heart shapes. Arrange bread in rows in baking dish. Tuck strawberries between and around bread slices. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, 2 tablespoons sugar, zest, vanilla, and salt. Pour over the bread pressing down lightly to absorb egg mixture. Let set 20 minutes. Sprinkle remaining 1 teaspoon granulated sugar over top. Preheat oven to 375°. Cover and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and continue baking for 10-15 minutes until the center is firm and the top is slightly browned. Let cool for 10 minutes. Sift powdered sugar over top and serve with butter and jam or fruit syrup if desired.
